The Surprise Paddler That Joined Our Crew!

An otters head is visible above the surface of blue water, with only its face and part of its head showing.

Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of taking the Reynolds family out for a twilight tour on the Little Maumelle River. They were a fantastic, energetic group, and it was a perfect evening—the kind where the air is cool but the setting sun still paints the water in shades of pink and orange.

We were quietly paddling through a dense patch of cypress trees, the only sound the gentle dipping of our paddles, when we heard a distinct thwack!

It was just behind Mrs. Reynolds’ kayak. She jumped, and we all quickly looked back. We’re used to beavers slapping their tails to warn us away, but this was different.

Suddenly, a beautiful river otter popped its head up just a few feet away! It looked like a curious puppy. It watched us for a minute, then dove under the water and popped up right next to my kayak!

For the next ten minutes, this playful otter decided to join our tour. It swam in and out of our path, diving under the boats and surfacing with a little shake, as if inviting us to play. It was completely comfortable with our presence, and the Reynolds family were absolutely ecstatic.

It’s moments like these that remind me why I started Arkie Cypress River Excursions. It wasn’t a planned wildlife sighting or a famous landmark; it was an unscripted, genuine connection with the wild heart of the Natural State. The river is full of surprises, and you never know what kind of magic is waiting around the next bend!
